A grant program to improve local businesses is open through the rest of May. The Neighborhood Business Improvement Program (NBIP) is a resource offered by Salt Lake City to help strengthen the local business community.

Construction begins on the 600/700 North Corridor after 5 years of planning
Construction to upgrade 600/700 North from 800 West to Redwood Road has begun. During the first phase, construction will focus on the south side of the road from 1200 West to Redwood Road. There will be four phases of construction over the next few years.

South Salt Lake to hold annual Mural Fest
All artists from Salt Lake City’s Westside are invited to a mini art festival
The 8th Annual Mural Fest, sponsored by the South Salt Lake (SSL) Arts Council, is quickly approaching. It will be held May 10 from 4-8pm and will feature the unveiling of 13 new murals throughout South Salt Lake. Participating artists from around the world are scheduled to begin their work on May 5 with final completion of each mural occurring at the festival.

myHometown hosts service projects throughout the year to clean up Westside neighborhoods
Continuing their goal of cleaning up the community, myHometown 2025 Salt Lake City is assessing additional community projects and services throughout the city. Right now, they’re focusing on three areas: Northwest (Rose Park, Fairpark, Westpointe and Jordan Meadows neighborhoods), Westside (Poplar Grove and Glendale neighborhoods), and Central (Ballpark and Liberty Wells neighborhoods).
The next myHometown Days of Service in those three areas will be in May. The organization will continue to host projects on various days through October and November. More information on each project can be found at myhometownslc.org.

Fairpark updates: Only one stadium, new zoning district created, Executive Director named
As developments in the Fairpark area go forward, only one major league sports stadium will be built after all.
Plus, the Salt Lake City Council has created the Jordan River Fairpark Zoning District along North Temple to oversee the development of the so-called Power District.
And a new executive director has been named to lead the Utah Fairpark Area Investment and Restoration District.

The Salt Lake County Immigrant People’s Agenda
For over two decades, Comunidades Unidas (CU), a nonprofit organization built by immigrant Latina women in 1999, has provided many of those trying to make Utah their home with the basic resources they need to thrive, focusing on healthcare, food, shelter, and economic security. While our direct services remain vital, we recognize that the power necessary to change the conditions immigrants face in Utah comes from the political formation of everyday, working-class people, including immigrants. Ultimately, this will enable immigrants to actively shape their communities and pursue lives that center their dignity.

Reconstruction of 600/700 North in Salt Lake City is set to begin sometime this spring or summer. There have been various discussions over the past few years on how to improve safety in this Westside corridor, and now the city is just about ready to move forward.

Salt Lake’s community-based nonprofit NeighborWorks is welcoming a new Chief Executive Officer. Bryce Garner has been appointed to be the next CEO of the organization effective March 24, 2025.

The Other Side Village open house showcases strong sense of community
Eager to share the results of months of hard work, teams from The Other Side Village and The Other Side Academy welcomed members of the community to a recent open house. Those who attended the event on January 27th were greeted in the village’s clubhouse with fresh donuts from The Other Side Donuts and hot chocolate, and were able to mingle with those who played a role in getting The Other Side Village up and running.

Salt Lake City seeking community member input for West-East Connections Study
For those of us who live on the Westside, we’re incredibly familiar with the challenges we face when trying to head east – to Downtown, the University of Utah, hospitals and other health care, shopping on 300 W, and more. Between I-15 and the railroad tracks, it can often feel like we’re cut off from the rest of the city we call home.
Now, Salt Lake City is launching a new study to analyze the problem and come up with solutions to help bridge the West-East divide. These solutions will include various kinds of transportation methods, including automobiles, public transit, biking, walking, and more.
