A grant program to improve local businesses is open through the rest of May. The Neighborhood Business Improvement Program (NBIP) is a resource offered by Salt Lake City to help strengthen the local business community.
The program is part of Salt Lake City’s Housing Stability Division. It uses federal funding to support small businesses in certain areas of the city. Through the program, for-profit businesses are able to receive up to a $50,000 grant to upgrade, fix, clean, and improve their facades.
City officials say the program offers a way to help uplift local neighborhoods. “Increasing the street appeal of properties positively affects the surrounding neighborhoods and boosts the economy on a local level,” says the city’s website for the program.
Businesses interested in the grant must meet certain criteria, including:
Having a facade visible from the street.
Being located in one of the city’s target neighborhoods, which include Rose Park, Jordan Meadows, Poplar Grove, Fairpark, Glendale, Ballpark, Liberty Wells, Downtown, Central 9th, and Central City.
Not having started construction on a project already.
Interested businesses must be located within the red lines indicated on the map.
Preference may be given to businesses that aim to add murals or make ADA accommodations. Preference will also be given to businesses that are able to contribute 25% of the total project costs, though this is not a requirement for receiving the grant.
Previous Westside recipients of the grant include Breaking Bread Barber Co., All Chay, Mindimino Restaurant, and Don Daniel’s Mexican Grill.
