Salt Lake City’s Westside residents will get a chance to see the latest plans for reconstructing 600 North and 700 North by attending an open house on Wednesday, April 16th. It’ll also be an opportunity for Westsiders to ask questions and get more specific information on timelines for the project.
It comes as transportation leaders finalize plans ahead of a several-month project that will result in road closures and detours around construction. It may be a bit of a headache for Westside residents for a bit, but city officials say it will be worth it in the long run.
The reconstruction will result in more trees, bike paths, dedicated sidewalks and other traffic calming measures along the route, all while maintaining the current number of lanes in each direction. Part of the project will also mean a complete rebuild of the Jordan River Bridge at 650 North. The closure of the road in this area is expected to last up to 8 months.
At a concept open house meeting in December, Salt Lake City Transportation Engineer Kyle Cook told The West View’s Sheena Wolfe that the city listened to the concerns of residents and came up with this plan as a result.
“This is a major investment, and it will truly be a more comfortable and welcoming street when it’s built,” Cook explained. “We are excited to be working with the community on a design that will transform the street for future generations while supporting neighborhood needs now. It’s not every day that we can do almost everything the community is asking for on a road project, but we have enough room to build the best of all options.”
The open house on April 16th will be held at Backman Elementary School (601 N 1500 W) from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. The project contractor will be available to answer any questions residents may have. Food will be provided and several giveaways will occur, including giveaways for bikes, helmets, and bike lights. Kids can also participate in a bike rodeo to learn bicycle safety tips.
