Chunga’s: Westside flavor that has stood the test of time

If you’re looking for good-quality Mexican food on the Westside, Chunga’s is definitely a place you should check out. Located at 180 S 900 W in the Poplar Grove area, Chunga’s has been serving the community since 2008 and continues to deliver delicious, high-quality Mexican food with bold flavors. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Chunga’s has built a strong reputation over the years, especially for their outstanding al pastor. For those who may not know, al pastor is marinated pork cooked on a trompo, or vertical spit. This cooking method slowly roasts the meat, making it tender and juicy while adding a beautiful caramelization that enhances the flavor. During the cooking process, pineapple is also roasted along with the pork, creating the perfect balance of sweet and savory. The combination of the rich pork and caramelized pineapple is something Chunga’s does exceptionally well.

When you dine in, you’re greeted by friendly staff who take your order and seat you. While waiting for your food, you’re served fresh chips and salsa, which is always a nice bonus and a great way to start the meal.

During my visit, I ordered the al pastor burrito, sopes, and three tacos. The prices were slightly on the higher side, but the portions were very generous. All told, the quality of the food definitely stood out. The highlight for me was the al pastor burrito — it was packed with flavorful pork and sweet pineapple. Alongside the burrito were delicious rice and beans, creating a dish that was truly satisfying and full of flavor.

No matter what you order, I strongly recommend trying the al pastor — it’s what Chunga’s does best, and you will not be disappointed. Another thing that makes the experience even better is that all the food is made to order, so everything comes out hot and fresh, showing the care that goes into each dish.

What makes Chunga’s special is its ability to stand the test of time. For nearly 20 years, it’s continued to serve the Westside community with the same quality and consistency that made it popular in the first place.
