Community Spotlight: March 2026
ICE buys Westside warehouse
The Department of Homeland Security has purchased a massive warehouse on Salt Lake City’s Westside to be used by U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement. It’s anticipated that the warehouse would become an ICE detention facility. SLC Mayor Erin Mendenhall has decried the purchase, saying she will use all her resources to prevent it from going in. Some Republicans have praised the purchase of the warehouse, saying it will be a win for public safety. The warehouse is located at 6020 W. 300 South in Salt Lake City.

Jordan River cleanup
Salt Lake City’s Public Lands Stewardship Program, in partnership with the Jordan River Commission, has been hosting monthly Stewardship sessions around the valley. These monthly outings are designed to invite community members to participate in restoration projects including tree planting, water trail maintenance, and invasive weed removal. Most recently, neighbors gathered at the Peace Labyrinth on Riverside Drive for a day of service. These family-friendly events are open to the public.

Hard-to-Recycle recycling event in Rose Park
The Utah Recycling Alliance hosted a CHARM (Collection of Hard to Recycle Materials) event at Rosewood Park on Saturday, March 7th. Members of the public were able to drop off materials typically difficult to recycle safely and/or are not accepted in curbside recycling bins, such as batteries, electronics, mattresses, scrap metal, tires, and more. The Utah Recycling Alliance hosts these events around the Salt Lake Valley in an effort to support their mission of inspiring and empowering Utahns to embrace a Zero Waste Culture. At CHARM events, materials are collected, organized into like materials, and then safely transported to a responsible recycling establishment.
