Jordan River bridge reconstruction underway in Rose Park

Motorists traveling through Salt Lake City’s Rose Park neighborhood will face a new detour for the next several months as the 600/700 North bridge over the Jordan River is rebuilt.

The bridge closed Monday, January 5, for demolition and a complete reconstruction and is expected to remain closed through June 2026.

The work is part of a larger improvement project along 600 and 700 North between Redwood Road and 900 West. Salt Lake City officials, who are coordinating the project with UDOT, say the bridge—originally built in 1965—has reached the end of its service life. With funding already available and much of the surrounding roadway already under construction, officials say this was an ideal time to replace the aging structure.

During the closure, motorists will be detoured north to 1000 North to cross the Jordan River. Transportation officials warn the detour could add travel time, particularly during school start and dismissal periods near Rose Park Elementary School.

Drivers may also use 500 North to cross the river, though that route is narrower, has a lower speed limit, and runs through a residential area. North Temple is another option but will result in a longer detour. Pedestrians and bicyclists can use alternate nearby routes for a shorter crossing.

The Jordan River Trail between 500 North and 800 North will also be closed for the duration of the bridge reconstruction.

Access to businesses and schools in the area will remain available during construction. Businesses along 700 North between the river and Redwood Road will remain open but will only be accessible from the west. Access to Backman Elementary School and Riverside Park will be maintained on the east side of the river.
