Community Spotlight: Summer 2025

Mestizo Coffeehouse says farewell

A pillar of the community on the Westside has closed. Owner Dave Galano says it’s a sad development, but he’s grateful for what Mestizo Coffeehouse was able to achieve. “The power of community is what fueled Mestizo Coffeehouse for 17 years. It was never just about coffee–it was about connection, creativity, and belonging. We are deeply grateful to everyone who poured their heart into making Mestizo a cultural anchor on the west side. Its legacy will continue in the relationships and movements it inspired,” said owner Dave Galano. Photos by Ben Trentelman.

Glendale pickleball courts open

The city celebrated the completion of 12 new pickleball courts in Glendale Park with a grand opening in August. These additions are part of a larger project and mark the first major amenity to be added to the park in over 60 years. Photo by David Ricketts.

Rose Park Mural Party

Westside residents gathered to celebrate the unveiling of Trevor Dahl's newest mural, 'Watchers of the Shore.' The mural party featured art, performances, and community organizations all working towards preserving the Great Salt Lake. Created in collaboration with the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation and the Great Salt Lake Institute, the piece honors the interconnectedness of people, wildlife, and environment.
